The Channel Island Electricity Grid (CIEG)
There are two 90,000 volt power cables that supply power to Jersey and on to Guernsey. The first was commissioned in 1985 – it is fluid filled for insulation and capable of supplying up to 55 MW of power.
Technological advances enabled the second cable, commissioned in 2000, to be insulated with plastic. It can provide the islands with up to 90 MW.
The supply from EDF is from Normandy and comes ashore in Jersey on the east coast. From there one underground cable feeds La Collette via a sub station at Rue des Prés and another feeds to the Powerhouse site at Queens Road and then on to Guernsey. The interconnection with Guernsey is used for exchanging power in either direction. The CIEG now supplies more than 95% of Jersey’s annual power demand and normally meets the full Island load demand for nine months of the year.
